Why the Women’s Team needs an IPL!

Nine needed off the last over, one off the first ball and a run out in the process so that Harmanpreet Kaur can keep strike. Next 3 balls are dot balls. The pressure does not get any bigger than this. It’s a Final . 8 to get off 2 balls . This ball has to go out of the park and yes it does. HK it is. 2 to get off the last ball and Rajeshwari Gayakwad runs like a hare to complete the second run. India pulls of a thriller off the final ball of the final match of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier. A tournament in which they should have been playing in any ways.

Where did HK get this power from to finish off an almost impossible chase, which at one stage was just a walk in the park? Was it her selection in the women’s Big Bash League back in Australia? Was it always in her to finish off the match in Dhoni style? Oh and yes, she was captaining the side in the absence of Mithali.

To me, it certainly seems that her selection in the Big Bash League has changed her as a player. It has made her responsible and accountable. Adam Gilchrist recently tweeted about how impressed he was with HK at the Big Bash. How much these things change you as a player, only HK can tell, but certainly it seems that Indian women’s cricket will only go from strength to strength in the future.

And this certainly brings us to the question. Why not an IPL alike tournament for the women? May be on a smaller scale, but the exposure that these girls would get would be enormous. Have the tournament in parallel to the IPL and in the same venues starting before the men get on to the field. Hope to see the women playing in may be the IWL – Indian Women’s League .
